Bilbao to Pobeña

I left the hostal in Bilbao at 6:00 am. After a bit of a dull and quiet walk through the sleeping city, I headed for Portugalete. I crossed the Nervión river on a high suspended gondola, almost like a ferry pulled by a gigantic crane (Bizkaio Zubia) - a bit of engineering magic. Then I met a beautiful couple from New York (Tony 76 and Helen 72) and we walked together to the beach in Pobeña where we shared coffee, croissants, stories and laughs. Then I walked 1.5 km on my own of a very long and shallow beach to end up in the albergue where I had my first “peregrino menu” in the camino (huge three course meal) followed by a power nap.
